Stone Sculpture:
I choose stone as my media of choice in sculpture for it's inherent beauty, in the knowledge that all stone is ancient, each sculpture is one of a kind, not reproducible, and again a paradox: both very hard and yet brittle, rough in the unfinished state, smooth and refined at the termination of the sculpting process.
My stone carvings are carved from translucent alabaster or marble, and mounted on a granite base.
This is a time intensive process in which the
initial roughing out of the stone is accomplished with pneumatic chisels,
followed by the use of hand tools, including rasps, rifflers, and serial
grades (grit) of sandpaper to achieve the final smoothness and luster in the
sculpture.
